Handmade floral card with layered flowers and the message “FOR YOU”

Have you ever paired two patterned papers and ended up with a busy mess? The secret is finding patterns that complement each other and letting a few carefully chosen elements do the work!

For this any-occasion card, I combined contrasting patterned papers with delicate lace and pretty florals to create a design that feels elegant without being overly complicated.

I have included a complete visual list of the supplies currently available in the next section, and a detailed list of the tools I use regularly at the end of the blog post for your convenience. If a supply wasn’t available when I recorded this, I have linked a similar item for you to check out.

Card Measurements

The finished cards measure 6 inches x 6 inches when closed.

  • Card base: 6″ × 6″
  • Dark blue mat: 5¾” × 5¾”
  • Gingham patterned paper: Two pieces, each measuring 1″ × 5½”
  • Floral patterned paper: 4″ × 5½”

Design Element 1: Contrasting Patterned Papers

Gingham and floral patterns take centre stage in this design. The gingham adds structure, while the floral paper brings softness and colour. A dark blue mat frames both patterns and creates an even border around the card.

Design Element 2: Lace for Elegance and Dimension

A die-cut lace trim covers the seam between the two patterned papers, bringing the design together beautifully.

I also layered several frames to create dimension around the sentiment. By placing the sentiment directly on the card base and adding the raised frame over it, I created the look of a recessed sentiment panel.

Design Element 3: Florals for the Finishing Touch

Clusters of flowers add the finishing touch to this design. I arranged them around the frame and sentiment, using foam squares to support the overhanging elements. A few gems in the flower centres add just the right amount of sparkle!

The result is an elegant card that balances contrasting patterns, delicate lace and dimensional florals without overwhelming the design.

Make It Your Own

The beauty of this design is its versatility. Change the patterned papers, choose different floral colours or swap out the sentiment to create a card for a birthday, thank you, get well soon or almost any other occasion.

Sometimes, all it takes is three well-chosen elements to bring a card design together!
