I’ve been having so much fun playing with vellum lately, and these two cards are a great example of why I love it so much.

For these projects, I used heavyweight vellum in two completely different ways: one card features heat-embossed and coloured vellum flowers, while the other uses embossed vellum as a window over a textured background.

Both cards have a soft, almost translucent quality that you just don’t get with regular cardstock.

You can watch the detailed YouTube tutorial here. For your convenience I’ve gathered all available supplies used in today’s project and also included a detailed list of tools I use regularly at the end of the blog post for your reference:

Card 1: Vellum Flowers with a Belly Band

For the first card, I heat embossed floral images onto heavyweight vellum and coloured them from the back.

Colouring the reverse side of vellum is one of my favourite ways to work with it. The ink looks much softer through the vellum, and the heat-embossed lines help define the images without making the colour look too harsh.

I also used a vellum belly band across the card and added a little dimension to the flowers before arranging them on the front.

The combination of the soft pink and orange tones, gold embossing, and gold accents gives this card a really pretty, elegant look.

Card measurements

  • Card base: 5½” × 5½”
  • Gold mat: 5½” × 5½”
  • Embossed card panel: 5¼” × 5¼”
  • Vellum belly band: 3¼” x 8½”

Card 2: Embossed Vellum Window

For the second card, I wanted to do something a little different with vellum.

I embossed a piece of heavyweight vellum and used it as a window in the centre of the card. The vellum was then coloured from the reverse side, allowing the embossed design to remain beautifully visible while adding just a touch of colour and contrast.

I love how the vellum creates a soft, translucent window against the embossed background. Adding the silver frame around the opening gives the card a little extra polish without taking away from the simplicity of the design.

And this technique gives you another fun option to play with: you could change the colour of the vellum, use a different embossing folder, or even leave the vellum completely uncoloured for a very soft and elegant look.

Card measurements

  • Card base: 5½” × 5½”
  • Embossed card panel: 5½” × 5½”
  • Vellum: sized to cover the centre window
  • Silver frame: sized to fit around the window opening

I also saved the centre piece from the vellum window rather than throwing it away. There’s always a use for those little leftover pieces! 😉
