Sometimes the most beautiful cards come together with just a few thoughtfully chosen elements. This elegant sympathy card combines patterned paper, delicate layered butterflies, and a simple sentiment to create a design that’s both timeless and heartfelt.
One of my favourite things about this layout is how versatile it is. Simply swap the sentiment and patterned paper, and you’ll have a beautiful card for birthdays, thank-you notes, get-well wishes, or almost any occasion.

✂️ Supplies Used
Step 1: Prepare the Patterned Paper Panel
Cut your patterned paper to 2″ × 5″.
Next, cut a piece of silver cardstock measuring 2¼” × 5¼” to create a narrow metallic border around the patterned paper. Adhere the patterned paper to the silver mat, centring it so the border is even on all sides.
Tip: A subtle floral or softly patterned paper works beautifully for sympathy cards without overwhelming the design.
Step 2: Create the Layered Butterflies
Die cut and emboss the butterfly wings from both vellum and white cardstock and the butterfly bodies from scraps of silver cardstock.
For a soft touch of colour, lightly blend blue ink onto the medium-sized vellum butterfly, starting at the centre and blending outward toward the edges. This creates a delicate wash of colour while maintaining the translucent look of the vellum.
Layer the vellum and white butterfly pieces together before attaching the silver body.
Step 3: Prepare the Sentiment
Create your sympathy sentiment using your favourite die, stamp, or sentiment set.
This clean design leaves plenty of room for a meaningful greeting without competing with the focal butterfly.
Step 4: Assemble the Card
Attach the matted patterned paper panel vertically to your A2 card front using foam tape. Position it so there’s an even border along three sides of the card.
Next, adhere the butterfly over the patterned paper panel. If any portion of the butterfly extends beyond the raised panel, place additional foam tape underneath those areas so everything sits at the same height.
Attach the sentiment using the same technique, adding foam tape wherever necessary to keep it level.
Step 5: Add the Finishing Touches
Complete your card by adding a few pearls around the butterfly for a touch of elegance and subtle dimension.
The result is a clean, sophisticated sympathy card that’s quick to make but looks beautifully polished.
