An Elegant Thank-You Card with Watercolour, Vellum, and Texture Paste

This handmade thank-you card combines three simple techniques—watercolour, vellum, and texture paste—to create plenty of soft colour and dimension. The best part is that the watercolour does not need to be precise; the loose, blended look is exactly what makes the design feel special.

✂️ Supplies Used

Step 1: Create the Watercolour Panel

Start with 110 lb heavyweight white cardstock, preferably Neenah Solar White or Classic Crest for vibrant colours. Add a tiny amount of quinacridone violet, quinacridone magenta, and permanent yellow deep watercolour to a piece of acetate. Lightly mist the paint with water to activate the pigment.

Turn the acetate onto the cardstock and press down, allowing the colours to transfer and blend naturally. The violet, magenta, and yellow will create lovely touches of orange where they meet. Keep some areas white rather than covering the entire panel—those open spaces give the finished card room to breathe.

If needed, use a clean cloth or tissue to lift excess colour or soften an area. Set the panel aside to dry.

Step 2: Add a Textured Background

Cut a background panel to 4 x 5¼ inches. Place a script stencil over the panel and apply shimmer texture paste in only a few scattered areas.

Keeping the paste light and partial is important here. The script should add visual interest without becoming readable or distracting from the floral focal point. Set this panel aside to dry completely.

Step 3: Create the Embossed Vellum Layer

Stamp the floral image onto vellum using embossing ink, then cover it with crisp white embossing powder. Before heating, warm up the heat tool; this helps reduce warping. Heat the vellum from the back until the powder melts into a smooth white finish.

Use the coordinating die to cut out the floral piece.

Step 4: Assemble the Floral Focal Point

Once the watercolour panel is dry, position the vellum floral die over it. Move it around until the most attractive areas of the watercolour show through, while preserving some white space. Cut it out with the die to layer beneath the vellum.

To adhere the vellum invisibly, place very small amounts of glue behind the white embossed lines. Because the adhesive sits behind the embossing, it will not show through the vellum. Leave some leaf and flower tips unattached to create a little natural movement.

Step 5: Build the Card

Adhere the watercolour and vellum flower on the textured panel to ceate the card front.

Next, mount the card front to an A2-sized metallic rose-gold card panel and adhere the entire arrangement to an A2 card base.

Finish the card with a dimensional white “thank you” sentiment stamped with black ink.

Add pearl drops around the design and in the flower centres for a delicate finishing touch.

The result is a soft, elegant thank-you card with three distinct design elements, beautiful dimension, and a handmade look that is easy to recreate.
