Sometimes the smallest tricks can make the biggest difference in your crafting.

In today’s post, I’m sharing nine of my favourite cardmaking hacks that I use regularly in my own projects. Many of these techniques solve common crafting frustrations — from aligning delicate die-cut sentiments to gluing vellum without visible adhesive.

If you’ve ever struggled with crooked sentiments, messy glue marks, or fiddly arrangements of die cuts, these tips will make your cardmaking process much easier.

You can watch the detailed YouTube tutorial here:

Hack #1: Use the Negative Die-Cut to Align Lettering

Layering delicate die-cut letters can be tricky because the pieces can easily shift out of alignment.

A simple solution is to save the negative die-cut piece and use it as a placement guide.

📝 Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Die cut your word and keep the negative cardstock piece.
  2. Place the letters back into the negative spaces.
  3. Apply glue to the letters and layer them together for dimension.
  4. Remove the letters before the glue dries so they don’t stick permanently to the template.
  5. Use the negative template again to help position the sentiment evenly on your card.

This trick keeps the spacing perfectly uniform and prevents delicate sentiments from becoming stretched or skewed.

Hack #2: Glue Cardstock Layers Before Die Cutting

If you want thick, dimensional die cuts, you usually need to cut multiple layers and glue them together.

Instead, try gluing the cardstock layers together before die cutting.

📝 Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Apply glue to one sheet of cardstock.
  2. Adhere a second sheet on top.
  3. Allow the adhesive to dry completely.
  4. Die cut the shape through both layers at once.

This saves time and eliminates the challenge of aligning intricate die-cut pieces later.

Hack #3: Flip the Die-Cut Sandwich for a Cleaner Cut

Sometimes thicker cardstock or stacked layers don’t cut cleanly on the first pass.

A helpful trick is to flip the die-cut sandwich and run it through the machine again.

📝 Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Run your die through the machine normally.
  2. If the cut isn’t complete, flip the entire sandwich so the die faces upward.
  3. Run it through the machine again.

This second pass often finishes the cut perfectly without needing to adjust your plates.

Hack #4: Glue Vellum Without Visible Adhesive

Because vellum is translucent, glue marks can easily show through.

A simple way to prevent this is to let the adhesive become slightly tacky before attaching it to vellum.

📝 Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Apply glue to the back of the sentiment or die cut.
  2. Wait a few seconds until the glue loses its shiny, wet appearance.
  3. Attach the piece to the vellum layer.

When the glue becomes tacky first, it is much less likely to stain the vellum.

Hack #5: Stamp Perfectly Centred Narrow Sentiments

Stamping narrow sentiments on slim banners or labels can be difficult to align.

You can create a simple stamping jig using the negative die-cut piece.

📝 Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Die cut the label or banner and keep the negative piece.
  2. Stamp your sentiment on scrap paper inside a stamping platform.
  3. Align the negative template around the stamped image.
  4. Place the die-cut label into the template.
  5. Stamp the sentiment again.

This ensures the sentiment is perfectly centred every time and works especially well for batch stamping.

Hack #6: Use Paper Strips for Dimension

Instead of foam tape, you can create custom dimension using leftover cardstock strips.

📝 Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Save the thin strips left behind after trimming cardstock.
  2. Apply adhesive to the strips.
  3. Layer them behind your die cuts or card panels.

This is a great way to add dimension while also reducing paper waste.

Hack #7: Use Non-Stick Paper for Mess-Free Gluing

The backing sheets from double-sided adhesive or sticker packs make excellent non-stick work surfaces.

📝 Step-by-Step Instructions

  • Place the sheet under your project when applying glue.
  • Use it as a surface for assembling die cuts.
  • Stick foam tape to it when cutting custom strips.

These sheets prevent glue from sticking to your desk and make clean-up much easier.

Hack #8: Use Press’N’ Seal to Transfer Arrangements

Arranging multiple die cuts on a card front can be frustrating because pieces tend to shift.

Using Press’n Seal allows you to transfer the entire arrangement at once.

📝 Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Arrange your die-cut elements on the card front.
  2. Place a piece of Press’n Seal over the arrangement.
  3. Press gently so the elements stick to the wrap.
  4. Lift the arrangement as one piece.
  5. Apply adhesive to the back and place it back onto the card.

This trick helps maintain your layout exactly as you designed it.

Hack #9: Create a Faux Letterpress Effect with Dies

You can create a subtle letterpress texture using your dies and embossing plates.

📝 Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Die cut the design from heavyweight cardstock.
  2. Glue two die-cut layers together to create a thicker piece.
  3. Place the die cut on top of your card panel.
  4. Use an embossing sandwich with a rubber mat.
  5. Run it through your die-cutting machine.

The result is a beautiful, subtle impression that adds elegant texture to your card design.

Final Thoughts

Small techniques like these can make a big difference in your crafting process.

Whether you’re aligning delicate die-cut sentiments, working with vellum, or arranging detailed die cuts, these hacks help simplify the process and make cardmaking more enjoyable.
